About School of Economics and Finance

The University of Hong Kong

The School of Economics and Finance at The University of Hong Kong was first established as the Department of Economics and Political Science in 1941, and was renamed as Department of Economics in 1970, and School of Economics in 1991.  The School acquired its current name in 1994.

The School is the world-leading education provider of economics and finance at the tertiary level, and has been playing a pioneering role in the study and theoretical application to substantive issues pertaining to Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.  It has about 60 regular and visiting faculty members who actively engage in research and teaching.  The School nurtures an active research environment and offers the most active seminar series in which overseas academics are invited to present their frontier research in economics and finance.

The School also provides comprehensive education in economics and finance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  It offers three undergraduate programmes – Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Economics and Finance, and Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Finance.  In addition, the School offers two taught postgraduate programmes – Master of Economics and Master of Finance – as well as Doctor of Philosophy at the research postgraduate level.  Each programme educates students with the theoretical understanding of economics and finance, and trains students with analytical skills, honed perspectives and practical applications in the contexts of Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.  Graduates of the School are prepared to either excel in their careers in business, government and community sectors, or to pursue further studies abroad.
